Abyssal Realm
Abyssal Born
The Abyssal Born stand alone as the sole ‘natural’ race native to the Abyssal Realm, a world defined by perpetual gloom, ancient curses, and the relentless weight of sorrow. Unlike the myriad beings that haunt the edges of this forsaken land, the Abyssal Born are true children of its darkness: entities whose monstrous nature is woven into both body and soul, yet whose forms remain uncannily human-like at their core.
Physical and Mental Nature
Each Abyssal Born is a living amalgamation of monstrous aspects, bearing traits culled from the nightmares and terrors that prowl the Realm. Sharp claws may sprout from otherwise human-like hands, eyes might gleam with spectral luminescence, and skin often carries the pallor of ash or the shadowy hue of midnight. Horns, fangs, and other aberrant flourishes are common, yet never wholly mask their human-like silhouettes. This duality—human in outline, monstrous in detail—renders every Abyssal Born distinct; no two bear the same configuration of unnatural features, as if the Realm itself sculpts each inhabitant in its own image of dread and despair.
Their mindset is equally shaped by the abyss, marked by a formidable resilience and a predatory cunning that borders on the unnatural. Haunted by instincts and desires alien to other races, their thoughts drift naturally towards shadow and ruin, yet even within their monstrous psyche, echoes of emotion—grief, longing, and rare flickers of hope—persist, twisted by the Realm’s influence into something both haunting and profound.
Strength and Lifespan
Abyssal Born are renowned for their terrifying strength, capable of feats that border on the supernatural. Their bodies harbour latent power, honed by generations of survival in a world where frailty spells certain doom. Legends speak of Abyssal Born tearing stone asunder, enduring wounds that would fell lesser beings, and moving with a speed that belies their often imposing forms. This monstrous fortitude is paired with absurdly long lifespans; some are said to walk the Realm for centuries, their vitality undimmed by the passage of time. Though the precise workings of their biology remain a mystery—perhaps even to the Abyssal Born themselves—it is clear that their existence is sustained by forces that defy the natural laws of other worlds, shaped by the very essence of the abyss.
Abyssal Born are uniquely bound to the magic of their homeland, wielding exclusively the Abyssal affinity. This singular connection means they cannot learn or perform any magic outside the scope of Abyssal power. The Abyssal affinity itself is formidable: it devours the forces of Fire, Wind, Ice, Gravity, Earth, Lightning, and Blood, yet is vulnerable to Light, Water, and Nature. Such magic marks its practitioners as avatars of ruin, their spells echoing the deep unknown and the consuming hunger of the Realm. The origin of this affinity is entwined with the Harbingers, and to wield it is both a privilege and a curse—an inescapable link to the Abyssal Realm itself.
In sum, the Abyssal Born embody the stark beauty and enduring terror of a land forsaken by light. Their individuality, monstrous might, and exclusive mastery of Abyssal magic render them both rulers and prisoners of the Realm—a testament to the splendour and sorrow that define their existence.
