Fairy Realm
Sluagh
(pronounced as: slew-ah)
Simply known as the vengeful dead, the Sluagh are among the most feared entities within the supernatural hierarchy of the Fairy Realm. Their origin is unique and tragic; unlike other spirits, the transformation into a Sluagh is governed by a strict rule that applies exclusively to faeries: when a faerie's life comes to an end, they must let go of all regrets and negative emotions. This requirement is essential for a peaceful transition. Failure to do so results in a fate far more dreadful than becoming a simple will-o-wisp, which are benign spirits granted the freedom to traverse between the Realm of the Dead and the Fairy Realm, albeit with certain limitations.
If a faerie dies while harbouring unresolved anger, sorrow, or bitterness, their spirit cannot attain tranquillity. Instead, they are condemned to become a Sluagh—a vengeful fae spirit consumed entirely by wrath, pain, and anguish. The transformation is irreversible and strips the individual of any hope for redemption or rest. As a Sluagh, the spirit loses the privilege of peaceful wandering and is denied entry into either the Realm of the Dead or the Fairy Realm’s Garden of Destined Rest. Should one of these tormented entities be exorcised or destroyed, they do not return to any afterlife; instead, they are utterly erased, vanishing into a void of non-existence where nothing remains—not even memory or essence. The only certainty is the chilling embrace of oblivion.
However, this cursed existence comes with certain powers. Sluagh possess unnatural strength that far surpasses that of ordinary fae or spirits. Yet, this power is coupled with an insatiable hunger for the souls of the living. Driven by their endless torment, Sluagh are compelled to seek out and consume the life force of others in the realm, hoping to fill the void left by their own anguish. This predatory nature makes them a constant threat, feared not just for their power but for the relentless nature of their hunger and the despair they embody.
It is whispered among faeries that the presence of a Sluagh brings not only peril but a palpable chill, as though hope itself is drained from the air. Legends caution that encountering a Sluagh is to face the embodiment of despair, their very touch capable of drawing forth one's deepest fears and regrets. Although rare, some ancient texts suggest the faintest possibility of resisting a Sluagh’s influence through acts of courage or selfless compassion, offering a fragile glimmer of defiance against their consuming darkness. Yet, for most, the appearance of these tormented spirits serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of unresolved grief, and the importance of finding peace before the final curtain falls.
